For many founders and members of the Fram-Equipment team, the Ukrainian outdoor sector is not just a professional field but a true home. We come directly from sports tourism, where we once competed and earned championship titles in mountain and hiking disciplines.

It was those long, demanding expeditions—where every gram of a backpack matters—that inspired us to create our own outdoor equipment brand.

That is why we know the Federation of Sports Tourism of Ukraine (FSTU) from the inside, including both its real strengths and its structural challenges.

What FSTU is: structure and main disciplines

The Federation of Sports Tourism of Ukraine is a national public organization that unites regional branches, city clubs, and tourism sections across the country.

Unlike narrow alpine organizations, FSTU covers a much broader spectrum of autonomous outdoor travel and training.

Main disciplines include:

  • mountain and hiking tourism (core direction for expedition culture)
  • water tourism
  • cycling tourism
  • ski tourism
  • caving (speleotourism)
  • auto and moto tourism
  • sailing tourism

FSTU forms a unified methodological and sporting system across all these disciplines, creating a structured environment for training tourists of different skill levels.

Training system and safety standards

One of the key elements of FSTU is the system of Route Qualification Commissions (RQC).

Through this system the federation:

  • approves tourist routes
  • defines difficulty categories (from I to VI)
  • evaluates group readiness before expeditions
  • analyzes safety and mistakes after trips

This framework creates clear safety standards for autonomous tourism in Ukraine and serves as the backbone of expedition preparation.

Thanks to this system, generations of modern Ukrainian guides, instructors, and outdoor entrepreneurs received their foundational training within FSTU.

Why sports tourism competitions matter

In addition to expeditions, FSTU organizes national championships and cups in sports tourism.

These are not symbolic competitions, but realistic simulations of extreme outdoor conditions.

Participants practice:

  • river crossings and rope systems
  • climbing and descending steep rock, snow, and ice terrain
  • rescue and transport of an injured participant
  • navigation and decision-making under pressure

In essence, these competitions act as a training ground before real wilderness expeditions.

Fram-Equipment position and support

For Fram-Equipment, supporting FSTU is not about formal cooperation but about preserving a culture of independent and technically competent travel.

We focus on two key areas:

1. Support for competitions in real terrain
We regularly partner with hiking, mountain, and combined tourism events that have practical value and develop real expedition skills.

2. Gear tested in extreme expeditions
We are proud that Fram-Equipment gear is used in many complex autonomous expeditions by Ukrainian teams. These expeditions are the most honest test for any outdoor equipment.

The Federation of Sports Tourism of Ukraine is more than an organization. It is a structured system that has been shaping generations of skilled, safe, and independent travelers for decades.

Its role in developing Ukrainian outdoor culture is difficult to overestimate, from basic training routes to high-difficulty expeditions.

Fram-Equipment will continue to support FSTU communities that maintain high safety standards, develop the Ukrainian tourism school, and train a new generation of strong explorers.
