How the mountaineering and climbing federation of Ukraine works: rules, training and the development of outdoor sports
When it comes to the Mountaineering and Climbing Federation of Ukraine (FAiS), members of the outdoor community may have very different views of it. The Federation is not a monolithic structure — it brings together different people, regional branches, clubs, and sports communities, each of which may have its own perspective on the development of sport and mountaineering.
At the same time, FAiS is the national federation working in the fields of mountaineering, climbing, and related disciplines, representing these sports within Ukraine’s sports system. The Federation brings together regional branches and clubs and provides a common framework for the development of competitive mountaineering, climbing, and training systems.
The regulatory framework and mountaineering training system
One of the important functions of a national federation is to establish rules, regulatory frameworks, and training systems for athletes and specialists.
Despite the bureaucratic nature of the state sports system, FAiS has spent decades developing standards and approaches to mountaineering training in Ukraine. Within this system, requirements are established for safety, the organization of ascents, route difficulty categories, and the training and certification of instructors.
This tradition has had a significant influence on Ukraine’s mountaineering community. Its graduates and representatives work in competitive mountaineering, tourism, instruction, and other areas of the outdoor sector.
For us, what matters is that behind the formal regulations lies the practical experience of generations — knowledge about routes, techniques, risks, and responsibility in the mountains.
Sports disciplines and competitions under FAiS
The Federation’s official status allows it to organize national championships, cups, and other sporting events. These competitions are not only about results — they are also an opportunity to test technique, tactics, physical preparation, and the use of equipment.
Mountaineering technique
One of the most practical disciplines is mountaineering technique competitions. Their distinctive feature is that participants complete tasks based on situations that can arise during real ascents: setting up belays, moving as roped teams, negotiating complex terrain, and demonstrating technical skills.
It is a discipline where sporting performance is directly connected to practical mountain skills.
Sport climbing
Sport climbing covers a wide range of disciplines, from competitions on artificial climbing walls to events on natural rock. In Ukraine, the discipline has a developed network of youth sections, clubs, and competitive athletes.
For many athletes, climbing becomes their first introduction to vertical terrain, movement technique, and belaying culture.
Ski mountaineering
Ski mountaineering combines skiing with mountaineering skills: uphill travel on skis, movement in winter mountains, and descents away from prepared pistes.
It is a dynamic discipline that requires not only physical endurance but also an understanding of winter terrain, weather conditions, avalanche safety, and mountain travel techniques.
Ice climbing
Ice climbing is another discipline at the intersection of competitive and practical mountaineering skills. Before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine regularly hosted domestic competitions, while Ukrainian athletes also participated in international events.
Despite the difficult circumstances, the community continues to train and represent Ukraine, while the development of the discipline remains an important part of the country’s vertical sports culture.
In this way, FAiS brings together different disciplines of vertical sport — from youth climbing to mountaineering technique and ice climbing — while helping preserve sporting and instructional traditions.
Why we support FAiS
For FRAM Equipment, supporting not only individual athletes and teams but also the environment in which Ukrainian outdoor sports develop is important to us.
That is why we cooperate with FAiS and support initiatives that contribute to the development of mountaineering, climbing, and related disciplines.
Mountaineering technique competitions are one of the disciplines that are especially close to us. Here, participants are tested not only on speed and physical fitness, but also on technical skills, tactics, teamwork, and their ability to use equipment correctly.
We also regularly support sport climbing competitions, helping athletes and organizers run events and develop the climbing community.
Ice climbing holds a special place in our cooperation. Before the full-scale invasion, we actively supported Ukrainian competitions in this discipline. Today, we continue to support Ukrainian ice climbers and their community.
For us, our partnership with FAiS is first and foremost about supporting the people who develop vertical sports in Ukraine.
We want to see Ukrainian mountaineering and climbing become stronger, more modern, and safer. That is why we will continue supporting active and meaningful projects that create opportunities for training, competitions, education, and the development of new generations of Ukraine’s outdoor community.
