In recent years, long-distance hiking routes have been gaining rapid popularity in Ukraine. This trend is driven not only by restrictions on international travel but also by a growing interest in the country’s natural and cultural heritage.
Gradually, a culture of long hiking journeys is emerging in Ukraine. And it is no longer just about the Carpathians. Lowland regions are also opening up to travelers, offering new routes, unexpected discoveries, and a fresh way to experience familiar landscapes.
One such route is the historical and cultural eco-trail “Volyn Heritage” — a project that combines natural landscapes, historical landmarks, and places where the past is organically woven into the present environment.
A Route That Combines Nature and History
The main feature of the “Volyn Heritage” route is the harmonious combination of two dimensions of travel: natural and historical. The trail passes through forests, ancient settlements, protected areas, and historic towns, allowing travelers not only to enjoy nature but also to deeply experience the region’s history.
The total length of the route is about 150 kilometers. It is designed according to international marking standards and passes through neighboring communities in the Volyn and Rivne regions. It can be traveled on foot, by bicycle, or by car.
Nearly 40 Unique Locations
The route includes around 40 historical, cultural, and natural heritage sites.
Key locations include Tsuman, Olyka, Klevan, Peresopnytsia, and Derazhne. Of particular interest are the Bilivske and Novozhukivske hillforts — archaeological sites preserving traces of the region’s ancient history.
Equally impressive are the natural highlights: the forests of “Tsuman Forest,” the “Zubr” nature reserve, the “Papiky” tract, the mysterious “Devil’s Swamp,” and the scenic Goryn river cliffs.
For hikers, this format is especially valuable, as the route goes far beyond scenic views. It offers a journey from protected forests to sacred and archaeological sites, and from natural ecosystems to towns rich in historical memory.
Designed for Travel
Importantly, the project features a user-friendly website with detailed descriptions of all route points and the option to download a GPS track.
Some sections are already marked, signposts have been installed, and in historic towns informational boards with QR codes provide access to maps and additional information.
A New Perspective on Volyn
“Volyn Heritage” demonstrates that Volyn is not only a destination for weekend trips but also a region suitable for full multi-day journeys with its own rhythm and character.
Such routes are shaping a new travel culture in Ukraine — more mindful, unhurried, and meaningful. They teach travelers to “read” the landscape through nature, architecture, legends, and collective memory.
The “Volyn Heritage” historical and cultural route is yet another proof that long-distance hiking culture in Ukraine is actively developing and becoming increasingly diverse.
